When I first started playing guitar, I didn’t know anything about singing, I didn’t know anything about girls, I didn’t know anything about drugs, and I didn’t know anything about the BLUES… but I sure wanted to. Growing up in Texas it was hard to play guitar and not be influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was one of my first guitar heros cause he knew about all those things (especially drugs and blues). I absorbed everything I could from his records while trying to play those songs in my bedroom. I will never forget coming home from school one afternoon and seeing my dad glued to the TV telling me Stevie had died in a helicopter crash. I remember exactly where I was sitting on the couch in the living room as a deep sadness came over me because all I could think was that I will never get to see him play live. I later would get turned on to the Beatles and start singing and writing pop songs, however, buried in some little pocket of my being are those SRV influences and on my recent trip to Sydney I pulled some of them out. I took a ride on a ferry with my acoustic guitar near the Sydney Opera house and started pickin’ one of my favorite SRV tunes for the passengers of the ferry. Here is a little taste-

Sitting in a college pub alone somewhere in New Hampshire, I wrote this (the bartender helped a little)

2/14/11
When there’s no one to call and you feel out of place And you’re struggling to find a familiar face When every corner you turn leads to bringing you down And not even your friends can change your frown So you resign to drinking the whole bottle of wine Celebrating a funeral for your dating life But remember the reason you feel this low Remember the heat when your heart turns cold For the sadness that consumes your body and mind Can change into LOVE in the blink of an eye

jotted this down on the back of a parking ticket while trying to dig my car out- these sound like lyrics to me… i just wish i knew what the music sounded like

walking down the block with soaked feet this time of year
my car is so damn cold
it won’t go into gear
it’s stuck in all this snow with no shovel to help clear
to dig this out by hand
is the only option here

if i find a reason to park up here again
i’m not so sure i’ll try
to parallel between your friends
these winter months only make me miss the southern trends
where the women have a way
oh the women have a way

it can build up so fast you can’t even tell
and waiting too long
is bad for your health
so the snow kept falling and clutching at my car
like a mound
and then a mountain
that buried up my heart

Today I saw a great band play live right in front of my face. Literally it was in front of my face because I was sitting in the front row at the Apple Store SoHo as Dr. Dog blew up a computer store. Playing a retail store is always weird no matter how you slice it, as I discovered over the past year and a half touring Apple Stores across the country. Still, their energy was inspiring and made me want to rock out with a band again… think I will as a matter of fact. However, for this week’s video post a duet will have to do. This is from my recent trip to Chicago when I stopped by the well known recording studio Chicago Recording Company and shot this live video with a old friend from Texas. Here is the first sneak peek into the upcoming album with a new song. Hope you enjoy!
Stay tuned…

Right now I am sitting on a veranda of what used to be an elegant hotel back in the 1920’s. I am fortunate enough to be staring out at Lake Michigan, while I am working on new tracks for my upcoming album and embarking on a new project called The Dirty Pinatas- a dance/DJ/remix electronic project with my good friend CJ “The Devil’s DJ”. Chicago is at the precipice of what seems like will be a great spring and I can’t wait to come back when I can take a kayak right into the lake after an afternoon of drinking. In other news this week’s video post is “Easy Fit” off the EP “A Kid On 4th”. It was shot live at The Riverhouse in New York- I wore a suit for the occasion. Stay tuned there is more to come…

As part of my ongoing weekly video posting for 2010, I am continuing this week with a song from “A Kid On 4th”. Over the last 2 weeks a dear friend and I have been shooting live videos for a handful of songs in choice locations around New York City. This week’s posting is a video for the song “What It Is” and we were fortunate enough to have a nice stretch of time on NYC’s newest city park The Highline. At some point the wind decided to have an epic battle with me through the ending of the song… still not sure who won

At this very moment I am cooking. As a kid, the only thing I understood about cooking was that it required mom to be in the kitchen at length so I would join her and try and stir stuff. I always stirred it too much. A couple of decades later here I am writing music and cooking a ziti/pesto/broccoli with chicken kind of thing- this has become my favorite dish to cook because when I’m done it actually tastes good. I am also cooking some other things that you eat with your ears and heart instead of your mouth and that’s really what I am here to talk about. I have started production on a new album. This will be a full length record consisting of songs I have buried in my journal and depths of my hard drive for various personal reasons that more than likely involved a form of insecurity. Rest assured, these songs, along with brand new material will surface in the upcoming months. However, as an appetizer I am pushing out a ton of new content to my YouTube Channel. In the past I have been asked for recordings/videos of certain songs I play live but have never released or covers I have adopted but never recorded. NOW is the time for these songs to come to life. As I go through the process with the new album I will be posting sneak peeks into new songs, and choice covers from artists that have influenced me over the years… Please stay tuned…

The Fuentes Staple
